Each mode fits a moment.

Claude Desktop has three tabs. Knowing which one you are in avoids confusion: slash commands only exist in Code mode.

01Understand

Chat

General conversation, with no access to files. For questions, doubts and brainstorming. No slash commands.

02Connect

Cowork

An autonomous agent that works on its own on a cloud machine. You delegate, it delivers. No slash commands.

03Build

Code

An interactive assistant with access to your files. This is where all the "/" commands and keyboard shortcuts live.

Where to type The commands below work in Claude Code (terminal, the Code tab of the Desktop app, or in editors). Inside a session, type / to see the current list and filter as you type.

Shortcuts that save time.

Session control

EscInterrupts Claude, keeping the work already done.
Esc + EscGoes back in the conversation.
Ctrl + CInterrupts the current input or generation.
Ctrl + DExits the Claude Code session.
Ctrl + LRedraws the screen if it gets garbled.
Ctrl + OShows or hides the tool usage history.
Shift + TabCycles through permission modes.

Text editing

Ctrl + AMoves the cursor to the start of the line.
Ctrl + EMoves the cursor to the end of the line.
Ctrl + KDeletes from the cursor to the end of the line.
Ctrl + UDeletes from the cursor to the start of the line.
Ctrl + WDeletes the previous word.
Ctrl + RSearches the command history.
